How to DIY Your Brand Aesthetic

October 6, 2024

If you are inspired to elevate your brand and establish your online presence with a beautiful color palette, unique typography, and great graphics, you are in the right place.

While it’s not typically encouraged to DIY your brand without graphic design experience, we all start somewhere. Not everyone has the financial means to invest in graphic design at the early stage of their business, or maybe you just want to unapologetically be involved in the creative process of your brand. That’s fantastic! With dedication and creativity, you can absolutely create a fabulous brand that authentically represents your vision. Embrace the journey, and enjoy crafting a brand that truly reflects your unique identity.

Step 1: Define Your Audience

Defining your brand audience is a crucial step in your business marketing strategy. Understanding who your potential customers are will provide valuable insights on how to appeal to them. This includes the way you communicate, the colors you use in your branding, the messaging in your copy, and the overall presentation of your brand as a solution to their needs.

To define your audience, consider creating a persona. Personas are fictional representations of your ideal customers and should include information such as age, gender, location, job, interests, challenges, and goals.

When defining your customer persona, it’s important to think in terms of psychographics. Psychographics go beyond demographics, considering values, lifestyles, and personality traits. Understanding the psychological aspects of your audience is crucial for crafting more resonant messages.

Here is the link of the customer persona template I use with my clients.

Step 2: Create an inspirational board in Pinterest

When you’ve got your ideal customer in mind, it’s time to blend that insight with the aesthetic you envision for your brand—the one that speaks directly to your dream client. A fantastic way to make this fusion happen is by creating a board filled with images that capture the vibe you’re aiming for—think aesthetic, colors, and mood.

So, here’s the deal: an inspiration board can be your secret sauce.

Here’s an example of what I mean:

Crafting an inspiration board is like giving your brand a visual compass. It not only helps you define the aesthetics you want but also serves as a reliable reference whenever you find yourself grappling with design decisions.

My top recommendation for creating this visual roadmap? Dive into the inspiring world of Pinterest.

Here’s a simple guide to get you started:

  1. Create a board with the name of your brand + vibes. For instance, “Luxe Interior Vibes.”
  2. Start by searching for the general feel you’d like to evoke. Try keywords like “old luxury” or “elegant” to kickstart your exploration.
  3. Once you’ve gathered a collection of elements, head back to your board. Scroll down to unveil the recommendations Pinterest has for your unique blend of vibes.

Now, what goes into this mood-boosting board? Think of it as a treasure trove for your brand’s visual journey. Consider adding font inspiration, logo ideas, textures, a palette of colors, and even lifestyle photos that resonate with the essence you’re striving for.

Happy pinning!

Step 3: Craft a color palette

Colors are more than just visual elements; they’re emotional storytellers, messengers, and the language that resonates with your audience. This is precisely why crafting a compelling color palette stands as a pivotal element in shaping and defining your brand identity. Here’s a guide to kickstart your color journey:

  1. Understand your brand personality:
    • Begin by defining your brand’s personality. This clarity will guide your color choices. Is your brand bold and adventurous, or does it exude calm sophistication?
  2. Consider your audience:
    • Referencing the profile of your target customer (as outlined in Step 1), align your color choices with your brand aesthetics and personality. Think about the colors that will resonate most with your audience.
  3. Limit your choices:
    • Embrace the mantra of “less is more.” Opt for a primary color, complemented by 2 or 3 additional colors. This simplicity ensures a cohesive and consistent look across your brand.

Now, if you’re seeking inspiration beyond your imagination, there’s an exciting option: explore existing color palettes online. Dive into platforms like Pinterest or utilize websites such as Coolors to discover a plethora of palettes waiting to spark your creativity. It’s a colorful world out there – embrace it!

Step 4: Identify the fonts for your brand

In the realm of brand design, fonts are more than letters – they are the storytellers, conveying volumes about your brand’s personality, tone, and style. Choosing the right typography is a crucial aspect of defining your brand identity. Here’s a guide to help you discover the perfect fonts for your brand:

  1. Think of your brand personality:
    • Start by contemplating your brand’s personality. Is it modern and sleek, or does it exude classic and timeless vibes? The fonts you choose should seamlessly mirror these distinctive characteristics.
  2. Prioritize readable fonts:
    • Make readability a priority across various platforms. Your chosen fonts should maintain legibility in different sizes and formats, ensuring a consistent and accessible brand image.
  3. Less Fonts. Less confusion:
    • Embrace simplicity by limiting yourself to a maximum of three fonts for your brand. Similar to selecting colors, this approach fosters consistency and avoids unnecessary confusion.
  4. Try to achieve harmony:
    • Strive for harmony in your font choices. Select font combinations that complement each other, creating a cohesive and visually pleasing aesthetic. A classic example is pairing a Serif Font with a Sans Serif one.

And to make your font exploration even more exciting, here are some of my favorite free font pairings:

Step 5: Apply your new elements into brand assets.

Now that you have a clear idea of your desired colors, fonts, and your ideal customer, it’s time to bring it all together into your brand elements.

Create Social Media Templates

Since your brand will be showcased on social media platforms, consider incorporating your brand elements into templates. If you’re using Canva, a convenient approach is to upload your elements into Canva’s brand tab. This ensures easy access to your branding elements at all times.

To customize your brand templates on Canva, click on “Set up your Brand Templates.” I’m using Canva as an example because it’s a platform I frequently use with my clients.

If designing social media templates yourself isn’t your cup of tea, platforms like Etsy offer a vast selection where you can find pre-designed templates that align with your brand aesthetic.

Find the Perfect Website for You

In this step, I recommend considering the purchase of a template that you can later customize to align with your branding. Think of your website as your online residence, a space to showcase all your branding elements—from fonts to colors and photography.
